HOUSTON, TX – March 08, 2013 – FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) is a unique varsity sport of the mind designed to help high-school-aged young people discover how interesting and rewarding the life of engineers and researchers can be.
"To see the fruits of the labor these young people worked so hard to complete in just a few short months, while still being full-time students, is really, really impressive and inspiring. This is always an exciting time! I've served in a variety of roles over the years and judging has to be one of my favorites", said Mr. McNeel. "The event is always exciting, energy abounds, the robots are often surprisingly complex and capable, and the students are motivated and engaged. There is a great deal of creativity, trying to solve the problems presented by the competition rules. The atmosphere is highly supportive, based on the idea of gracious professionalism, maturity, and partnership building."
Mr. McNeel added, "Often I have seen teams helping each other out, even when they will compete against one another later. Enduring friendships are forged. This is a very rewarding event. Many of the teams also do work in the community, bringing the values and principles of FIRST to other students. These young students are much more likely to pursue engineering and science related degrees because they can see how rewarding these fields can be. And the Lone Star Regional team that makes this all happen, lead by Lucia Sevcik, is just fantastic. Very organized, very professional."
